The Recording Academy has more or less crowned Lil Kim the “Queen” of hip-hop in a viral tweet that is making a lot of noise.
Friday, the Twitter account for the organization sent out an update that read, “Lil Kim has released the video for her single “Nasty One” off her first album in 10 years, and it’s here to show us that the queen 👑 is back.”
The tweet linked to an article on Grammy.com about the legendary femcee’s new music video “Nasty One” that premiered on August 1.
Online commenters were surprised by the message because Kim’s nemesis, Nicki Minaj, is releasing an album titled Queen in the upcoming weeks.
Moreover, the Recording Academy is supposed to be neutral and not take sides in musical feuds.
Fans of the Young Money artist were not pleased and were not shy about voicing their concerns. They are not the only ones who reacted after the tweet was published.
One commenter critical of the statement wrote, “I understand Kim is the original. But at some point, you need to put your player card down. Her time has passed. Next.”
“Kim might be the original, but we as a culture don’t stan for someone who bleaches their skin… talk about self-hate. Ha, won’t catch me buying anything from her,” another music enthusiast added.
It will be interesting to see if Minaj will address the shade in the future.
