Arabella Juniper Torres is in the news for all the wrong reasons, just ask Darsell Obregon, a woman who was seeking shelter from the rain near a doorway.
Obregon shared the details on Facebook where she explained that on July 25th, she was caught in the rain and a thunderstorm in New York. While waiting for an Uber, she sought shelter outside of a building.
Obregon said she was shocked and startled when a white woman, Torres, ran out and told her to leave or she will call the police.
She refused because she had already given the Uber driver the address where she was.
The unhappy woman proceeded to call 911 and explained that she was illegally standing in the doorway to stay dry from the rain.
Via Facebook, Obregon said: “On Sunday afternoon, I was in Brooklyn walking to the train when a sudden rainstorm began, and I hid in the doorway outside of a random apartment in Park Slope to shield myself from the rain and called an Uber.”
She added: “No more than 3 minutes later a young woman who lives in the building opened the front door and told me that I can not stand there and had to leave. I told her I was not going to move (unbeknownst to her I was just waiting for my ride and would be leaving in a couple of minutes) so then she called the police.”
In the now viral video, Torres appeared a bit uneasy as she said: “You’re standing on public property, ma’am, you know that right? This is not public property.”
After the Uber arrived, Juniper told Obregon: “If you go anywhere, you’ll be committing a crime, as well, you know that right?”
Some people say that race had nothing to do with the situation.
